I have a Masters Degree in teaching English as a Second Language. I currently teach community college ESL in California, and I also hold a California teaching credential so I can teach adult education classes. I want to relocate to the UK. Jobs teaching adults in general seem to be scarce, and I was told by the one teacher recruiting agency that actually replied to my inquiry email that I am not in high demand. All of my teaching experience thus far has been with adults. I am not opposed to teaching children; I have just always enjoyed teaching adults and have now built up a resume in adult education and community college experience. Would I be able to find work teaching ESL to children without that actual experience? Also, I know quite a few British expatriates here, and they tell me my accent would not be a liability in my particular field. However, I find some places online that differ with that opinion. I understand there are some grammar and spelling differences, and I recognize that I would have to be prepared to teach British, not American, English. I attended school in London for a year as an undergraduate student and was required to write my papers using British English, so this will not be a problem for me. I am baffled as to where to begin, as recruiting agencies haven't been replying to my emails and I am somewhat confused about exactly where my credentials and experience fit in to the British education system. Does anyone out there have any thoughts on all of this? I appreciate your comments!
