Re: What is a PGCE worth in California?

The above makes it sound more complex than it is. First you
must have four years full time teaching experience. If you do,
do the following...
Here's the website:
http://www.ctc.ca.gov/credentials/leaflets/cl870.pdf
1. Get your transcripts evaluated. The institution at which
you did your PGCE needs to issue you an official trnascript
including your teaching placements. Look on the Ctc website
for which company to get the evaluation from (I did ECE and
although they were cheap they took forever).
2. Send evaluation to CTC along with related application and
live scan fingerprints (you'll have to go to the police to get
fingerprinted).
3. They will issue you with a five-year preliminary
credential. In those five years you must take three tests, the
CTEL (about teaching English learners), the CBEST (basic skills
test) and the CSET (Subject matter competence). Then you
will be issued a clear crendential. The only problem is that
many schools want you to have these three before they hire
you. If you have time on your hands, start studying before you
leave the U.K. and book to take all three when you arrive.
The best revision guide for the CTEL is this book:

Development-Handbook/dp/0205443257/ref=tag_dpp_lp_edpp_ttl_in
4. Request three "open references" from leadership team or HOD
before you go. In America these are called letters of
recommendation and most schools want these in addition to
references. They must be less than two years old.
